Harbor Science and Arts Charter School

St. Fergal’s National School

3rd grade students from Harbor Science and Arts Charter School in New York City participated in a collaborative art exchange with 3rd class students from St. Fergal’s National School taught by Orla Irwin. The workshop sessions in Ireland were led by Cork artist and educator Chris Finnegan. Students made drawings of local landmarks, and then worked in groups to create short introduction videos to share with their digital pen pals. They created a scavenger hunt as a group to be solved by the other class (and their families), and then the kids went out into their communities to photograph the answers. They also posed as imaginary tourists, and were shrunk into “mini-tourist” cut-outs who were welcomed into each other’s schools and homes. Some students in Ireland went further by creating accordion books of how they imagined life in the Big Apple. Both schools had culminating exhibitions with work from students in both countries displayed, with the exhibition in Ireland taking place at Greywood Arts.
